Saving the Vaquita Porpoise
Operation Milagro V - 2019
Born in 1986, Nina Courjon grew up in Brussels. Passionate about adventures, she takes every opportunity to travel and discover the world. She develops a particularly strong bond with Mexico where she decides to settle in 2016. There she reconnects with her long time passion : photography.
As a teenager, Nina spent hours in the dark room revealing her stolen moments. Later she came to realize that photography would become - not only a passion - but a strongly valued skill. The transition towards digital photography opened new forms of communication. She could use it to connect and communicate in innovative ways through the support of social networks.
In 2019, this quest took a decisive turn when she enrolled for a 3 months mission on the NGO Sea Shepherd's iconic vessel. As a media responsible, Nina was relentlessly photographing, filming and sharing on digital platforms the formidable work undertaken by the volunteering staff as well as unveiling the disasters caused by illegal fishing and its impact on environment.
For the first time in Nina's career, photography acted as a combative tool - one that would call for the urgency of taking action within our overexploited seas. There was no going back after this life changing experience - Nina would then dedicate her life and work for humanitarian and environmental causes.
« The most powerful weapon in the world, as far as I'm concerned, is the camera. » Paul Watson.
